Whose Authority?

One day as He was teaching in the temple courts and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to Him. "Tell us by what authority you are doing these things, " they said. "Who gave you this authority?" Luke 20:1,2 The crux of the matter is: "Did we give you permission to do what you are doing? Don't you realise we are the ultimate authority? Sure we can't heal the sick or raise the dead, but who needs them anyway." Don't you see the self- righteousness bristling up, much like a peacock, and confronting the Son of God. How arrogant! How foolish! Yet people are still doing it. 'How dare you God demand to be GOD didn't you know I am God around here!!!' Because their demand was so foolish and so flawed, Jesus replied with a question of His own, one that would reveal they true colours and their foolishness. To avoid the revelation they said they did not know the answer. This fur...

A House of Prayer

Then He entered the temple area and began driving out those who were selling. "It is written," He said,  "My house will be a house of prayer," but you have made it a den of robbers." Every day He was teaching at the temple. but the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill Him. Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on every word. Luke 19:45-48 Jesus really knew how to stir up the ire of the leaders. He was challenging the status quo. The leaders had allowed the selling in the courts of the Gentiles. Yet God held them as important to Him, even if the leaders despised them. It is interesting that God calls His house, a house of prayer. What do we view it as? A gym, a place of health and well being, a place of fun and activity? Prayer is not usually high on the list, yet it is what God sees it as. Is God challenging your world? Don't resent the challenge, seek Him in it. The chal...

Judgement Day

As He approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace- but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognise the time of God's coming to you. Luke 19:41-44 Because of the hardness of heart, Jerusalem was, in the coming years besieged just as Jesus had predicted. Hardness of heart will be judged by the Lord, in His way, and in His time. I remember an elderly woman who dressed like a queen. I shared the gospel with her on many occasions but she refused. Her end was not good, her eternity even worse. I have watched people die horrible deaths all because they clung to bitterness, hatred, right to judge, and criticism.  We each are given s...

Glory to the King

After Jesus had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As He approached Bethpage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples, saying to them, 'Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ridden. Untie it and bring it here, if anyone asks you, Wh are you untying it? Tell them, The Lord needs it." Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as He had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owner asked them, 'what are you untying the colt?' They replied, 'The Lord needs it.' They brought it to Jesus, and threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. As He went along, people spread out their cloaks on the road. When He came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 'Blessed is the king who comes in the name of t...

What is the task?

While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because He was nearing Jerusalem and the people thought the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. He said, "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed King and then to return. So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. 'Put the money to work, ' he said, 'until I come back. But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our King.' He was made King, however, and returned home. He then sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained from it. TheL  first one came and said, 'Sir, your Mina  has earned 10 more.' 'Well done, my good servant! His master replied. Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' The second came and said, 'Sir, your mind has earned 5 more.' His master replied,...

Zacchaeus

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up to him and said, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a sinner." But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and save what was lost." Luke 19:1-9 I wonder why Zacc...

A Different View

As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." He called out, " Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" Jesus stopped and ordered the man be brought to Him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, "What do you want me to do for you? "Lord, I want to see," he replied. Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God, when all the people saw it they also praised God. Luke 18:35-43 The crowd had a momentum all of its own, yet it had run on in the flesh and deemed this blind man not worthy of stopping Jesus. It is so easy to run along in momentum and feel the euphoria but miss the heart of God...
