The Words of My Mouth

No foul language is to come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear. And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by Him for the day of redemption.
Ephesians 4:29‭-‬30 HCSB

Our culture swears in many ways. Recently a series of adds in Australia, with the catch phrase of "bugger" was run. They showed all manner of slips and spills and at the end of each, which were funny, the word 'bugger' was said. It is and Australianism that has been around for a long time. My dad, in fact, when showing his displeasure would say: "Go to buggery!" Now, outside of Australia these saying would be seen for what they are: foul language.

Of recent times I've noticed the millenials adopting another word 'frigging'. This word is too close to another word which pervades the movie theaters and social media. I can see the dangers but they don't seem to mind. Why?

Our culture can desensitize us and as Christians we can adopt certain words because that is what is common. Yet, what does the Holy Spirit say? What is important to Him?

Jesus said:"let your 'yes' be 'yes' and your 'no' be 'no'". He was referring to swearing as in an oath, however what was He saying? You don't need to embellish your words to appear cute or 'in'. If we do embellish we are fleshing it out. Now I know it sounds harsh but how about asking the Lord: " Does.my language offend You? Is the another way?"

King David prayed: 'let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight oh God'! Psalm 19:14
